The mild temperatures in Andalusia make it possible to start a winter basil cultivation in November 2020. Before long, the herb becomes a staple on our menu. And with it, a daily fascination for this powerful king of herbs.
A friendship begins. The plant thrives, blooms, produces lush green leaves and ripe seeds.
The basil travels with us—as a seed, as a seedling, as a mature plant. To the east, to the west, to the northernmost Lapland, back to Switzerland and to the gentle-yet-raw Brittany. There, the plants that travelled via Switzerland to Lannavaara spend the winter. In spring, they show their full flowering power and travel on with us to the Green Belt. They carry within them the knowledge and experiences of all our years on the road.
In the summer months of 2024 and 25, the king of herbs grows among tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, various lettuces, peas, kohlrabi, cucumbers, radishes, zucchetti (zucchini), corn and spinach in our northern garden—68.04747° N, 21.97416° E
Not all in abundance, but the attempt north of the Arctic Circle is more than worth it.
